Please refer to the image to see the structure of a motor with an electromagnetic brake. 
 When voltage is applied to the electromagnetic coil, the armature plate held down by the spring is immediately attracted to it, creating a gap between the armature plate and the brake lining, and readying the motor for start operation. When the coil voltage is shut off, the armature plate applies the spring pressure to the brake lining, generating a braking force halting the motor immediately.
